August 2026

August held space for lots of memories made and milestones reached. Mini adventures with cousins and friends made up much of our time as we headed into the new school year.

From hangouts after Dad’s basketball games to outings at the Children’s Discovery Center and Windward Mall to camping with friends we had a blast saying ta-da to summer and hellllooooo to the new school year.

The end of summer gave us tons of family moments and time to explore. The Children’s Discovery Center was a highlight— for its nostalgia and that chance to go with their cousins. After a fun-filled morning, we went to eat at a tucked away tiki bar and restaurant, La Mariana, on Sand Island.

Though it was fun to visit kid-friendly establishments that we don’t always have time for with our busy schedule, our family’s favorite end-of-summer activity was camping with friends at Bellows Beach. With a solid crew of parents and kids, it was a memorable weekend of crabbing, swimming, eating, and playing.

Kolby started Kindergarten as Kendyl began 3rd grade. Both kids adore their teachers and have thoroughly enjoyed being at the same school. Let me tell you, one drop off and one pick up is life-changing.

After a few weeks, the school hosted open house to give the kids an opportunity to introduce us to their teachers and show us what they have been up to. It was nice getting to see their enthusiasm about school and all their teachers.

Asked both kids what they like about school so far—

Kolby: double recess and double lunch (meaning he gets a second serving).

Kendyl: her teacher and the schoolwork.

Proof that our kids may look alike but they sure are their own humans.

Sports continues as usual. Kolby’s flag football team concluded its season just as baseball started back up again. Kolby is fortunate to be playing on his same (awesome) team with Dad as one of his coaches. Kendyl has transitioned back to soccer, playing both AYSO and club soccer for Albion, a Kailua-based club team.

Parenting Hack— sign up for snacks for both kids on the same day. Preferably at the start of the season, so you can check “snack day” off your mental list. We opted for spam musubis, fruit, and snack favorites of each kid paired with a drink. We kept it simple with grab-n-go for our sake— as we went from one kid’s game in town straight to the other kid’s game on the windward side.

Well….August came and went. Real quick. We are fall ready and looking forward to all that is in store for next month especially our planned family trip to the Big Island to spend time with family at a very special place.
